During the FIFA Women's World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand (Aotearoa), there has been a strong focus on using the traditional names of the host cities alongside their more commonly used names. In the case of Meaanjin, or Brisbane, the city was founded upon the homelands of the Turrbal and Jagera peoples. Meaanjin is derived from the Turrbal word for the spike of land that Brisbane sits on. New Zealand is also known as Aotearoa. One literal translation is 'long white cloud', commonly lengthened to 'the land of the long white cloud'.
An Indigenous elder performs the "Welcome to Country" ceremony in Brisbane - Meaanjin before the South Korea v Germany group match.
The elder also welcomed all Korean and German supporters in their own language.
The welcome was followed by a short performance from a didgeridoo player (below).
