On Saturday 23rd November, 1974, Crystal Palace were due to make the short trip from Selhurst Park to Sandy Lane for this much anticipated local
derby. Rain (too much of it) ensured that the referee, Ron Challis from Tonbridge, had no choice but to postpone the fixture. It was
rescheduled for the following Wednesday. Crystal Palace, or perhaps more to the point, Malcolm "where's my Fedora?" Allison, pushed for an
afternoon kick off as he didn't want to play under Sandy Lane's lights.
An understanding boss allowed me to take the afternoon off and I made my way to the ground in readiness for the kick off. Forty-five seconds
after kick-off and all Terrors fans were checking to see who we would meet in the second round.
