This game was one of the last two to be played in the group stages. On the other side of the country in Perth (Borloo), Morocco were taking on Colombia. All teams were still in with a theoretical chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. Germany, two time winners of the FIFA Women's World Cup, had never failed to advance from the group stages. Morocco were in their first FIFA Women's World Cup. Could they match the achievements of their male counterparts who had performed so well at the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2022?
Two hours later, 38,945 supporters at Brisbane Stadium and everyone else knew that the Germans had failed to beat South Korea and in doing so, had failed to match Morocco's result in Perth (Borloo) and were out. Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! Cue wild celebrations by the Moroccan players. (3rd August 2023).
