The Little Fella
The Railway
Be Prepared

The third "home" for those of age and a regular meeting place for not only members of the Estreham-Livingstone VSU, but also many supporters and friends.

Jack was "Mine Host" and a very welcoming one too. Jack provided the Unit with access to a very large storage facility "out the back" which was greatly appreciated by the Unit's Quarter Master. Canoes, tents and general equipment were all stored in this facility which probably was a stable for horses that delivered beer by dray back in the day.

These days The Railway has received a makeover and is much posher than it was back in the 1970s.

The Railway

Early census entries show that The Railway was listed as the Railway Tavern, Ellison Road until at least 1919. The pub is named as the Railway Tavern on intersecting Ellison Road (at Greyhound Lane) in Post Office directories of 1921 and earlier, while in the same directories the address at 2 Greyhound Lane is listed as a "wine & spirit merchant" (with the same proprietor as the pub), so the frontage to Greyhound Lane may have been the entrance to the off licence part of the premises at this time.

Railway Hotel, 2 Greyhound Lane in 1956 An earlier photo of The Railway. Is that the Unit's transport outside?
